About  Phlebotomy Technician

The word phlebotomy means the drawing of blood by venepuncture for transfusion, diagnostic testing or experimental procedures. A Phlebotomy Technician and a Phlebotomist are interchangeable job titles for the same career. Phlebotomist draws quality blood samples from patients or blood donors and prepares those specimens for medical testing. Many patients have phobias when it comes to blood and needles, and giving blood can be the most difficult part of an office visit.

The phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skilful, safe and reliable manner. Phlebotomy is a part of Medical Laboratory Technology.

This certificate course deals with collecting blood from patients, storing it and transporting it to medical laboratory for further testing but these Allied Health Professionals are also trained in dealing with other samples such as urine, stool and tissue samples. They are also trained to maintain patient records. The role of phlebotomists as key laboratory personnel, who provide critical contributions to accurate laboratory information leading to the accurate detection, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease.
